The Event

The chimpanzee Enos flew aboard Mercury-Atlas 5 on November 29, 1961. The mission tested systems before an American astronaut attempted an orbital flight.

The Wider Story

Enos completed two orbits before the spacecraft returned earlier than the original plan. Technical problems and the animal's experience form an important part of the mission record.

Putting the Event in Perspective

Enos was not the first animal in orbit, and no human was aboard.

Reading the Historical Record

A respectful illustration can focus on the spacecraft and recovery preparations without showing animal distress or inventing a perfectly trouble-free test.

About the Historical Recreation

The accompanying visual is an illustrative reconstruction: a Mercury spacecraft above Earth and a distant recovery ship, no close-up animal testing. It is not authentic archival footage, an eyewitness record or additional evidence for the event.
