The Event

The Soviet Union launched Sputnik 2 on November 3, 1957, carrying the dog Laika. She became the first animal to orbit Earth.

The Wider Story

The spacecraft was developed quickly after Sputnik 1. It had no system to return Laika safely, and she died early in the mission rather than surviving for the duration originally suggested in public accounts.

Putting the Event in Perspective

The flight provided information relevant to future human spaceflight, while also raising lasting questions about animal welfare.

Reading the Historical Record

An illustration should not imply that Laika returned to Earth or was rescued.

About the Historical Recreation

The accompanying visual is an illustrative reconstruction: a respectful illustrative Sputnik 2 spacecraft above Earth, no distressed animal or invented recovery. It is not authentic archival footage, an eyewitness record or additional evidence for the event.
