The Event

Bolshevik-led forces took control of key locations in Petrograd on November 7, 1917, by the Gregorian calendar. In the Julian calendar then used in Russia, it was October 25.

The Wider Story

The action overthrew the Provisional Government and brought the Bolsheviks to power. It followed months of instability after the earlier revolution that had ended the monarchy.

Putting the Event in Perspective

The name October Revolution reflects the calendar difference.

Reading the Historical Record

Later civil war, consolidation of power and the establishment of the Soviet Union were not all completed on this single day.
