The Event

On November 2, 2000, Expedition 1 reached the International Space Station aboard a Soyuz spacecraft. William Shepherd, Yuri Gidzenko and Sergei Krikalev became its first resident crew.

The Wider Story

They entered a station much smaller than the later complex. Early work involved activating equipment, organizing supplies and making the growing outpost suitable for long stays.

Putting the Event in Perspective

The crew launched on October 31; November 2 marks docking and arrival.

Reading the Historical Record

Those milestones should remain separate, and images of the completed station would misrepresent what the first crew encountered.

About the Historical Recreation

The accompanying visual is an illustrative reconstruction: the compact early ISS configuration above Earth followed by an illustrative early station interior. It is not authentic archival footage, an eyewitness record or additional evidence for the event.
