Closing the Arch

On October 28, 1965, workers placed the final section of the Gateway Arch in St. Louis. The operation completed the monument’s distinctive continuous form.

Saarinen’s Design

Eero Saarinen’s design required two rising legs to meet accurately. The monument’s apparently simple silhouette depended on demanding construction and geometry.

Completion Is Not Public Opening

The north tram opened in 1967 and the south followed later. Structural completion did not mean that every visitor facility began operation on the same date.

A Monument’s Interpretation

The arch commemorates westward expansion, a history that includes opportunity, dispossession and conflict. Its architectural form does not settle those different experiences.

An Engineering Anniversary

The final piece made the construction milestone visible. Photographs of the closure can explain how the structure was built rather than treating it only as a finished skyline symbol.
