The Event
On November 1, 1512, the newly painted Sistine Chapel ceiling was used for the solemn All Saints' Day liturgy. Michelangelo had transformed the chapel's vault into a vast arrangement of biblical scenes and figures.
The Wider Story
The commission required painting on curved surfaces far above the floor. Its central Genesis scenes belong to a larger decorative scheme, rather than a single isolated picture.
Putting the Event in Perspective
The Last Judgment on the altar wall was a later project.
Reading the Historical Record
A recreation of the chapel in 1512 must not show that later painting as already complete.
About the Historical Recreation
The accompanying visual is an illustrative reconstruction: a slow upward view of the Sistine Chapel ceiling, avoiding the later Last Judgment wall. It is not authentic archival footage, an eyewitness record or additional evidence for the event.
