The Legal Beginning

On October 24, 1945, the United Nations Charter entered into force. The required ratifications made the new international organization formally operational.

The Earlier Signing

The Charter had been signed in San Francisco on June 26. The October anniversary therefore concerns entry into force, not the original signing ceremony.

Why Ratification Mattered

The document required action by a majority of signatories, including the five permanent Security Council members. A diplomatic text needed the specified approvals to establish its legal effect.

An Institution After War

The organization emerged from the devastation of the Second World War. Its framework created forums and procedures through which states could address security and other shared concerns.

An Anniversary of a Framework

The Charter did not eliminate international conflict. The date marks the beginning of an institution and its obligations rather than a moment when governments ceased to disagree.
