The Test

On October 30, 1961, the Soviet Union detonated the device commonly called Tsar Bomba over the Novaya Zemlya region. It remains the largest nuclear explosion ever tested.

An Exceptional Scale

Historical estimates place the yield in the tens of megatons, around 50 or more depending on the account. A single overly precise number can conceal differences between reported estimates.

A Military Demonstration

The explosion was a weapons test, not a scientific experiment detached from strategy. Its scale communicated power during a period of nuclear rivalry.

What It Does Not Show

The test’s size does not mean that all nuclear weapons or all later tests had comparable yields. Nor should a visual reconstruction imply that a city was the target.

The Larger Question

The anniversary concerns technological capability and its destructive implications. A responsible treatment can explain monitoring and proliferation without presenting the detonation as an achievement to celebrate.
