Independence Day
On October 24, 1964, Zambia became independent from British rule. The territory had previously been known as Northern Rhodesia.
A New National Identity
The change involved institutions and diplomatic relations as well as a name. A new flag was adopted as an expression of the independent republic.
International Recognition
The United States recognized Zambia on the same day and elevated its Lusaka consulate to an embassy. Diplomatic records provide a dated marker of the transition.
Symbols and Their Limits
A flag-raising can represent sovereignty, but it does not summarize every challenge facing a new state. Economic structures and political questions continued after the ceremony.
What the Date Marks
The anniversary identifies a specific constitutional and international change. It should not be treated as the beginning of the region’s people, communities or history.
