The Attack

On October 27, 2018, an antisemitic attack at the Tree of Life synagogue building in Pittsburgh killed 11 worshippers. Members of three congregations were gathered there.

A Community, Not Just a Building

Tree of Life, Dor Hadash and New Light congregations were affected. The setting was a place of worship and community, not merely the location of a criminal case.

The Federal Prosecution

A federal jury later convicted Robert Bowers on charges including hate crimes resulting in death and obstruction of religious exercise. The conviction occurred years after the attack.

Keep the Dates Separate

The 2018 anniversary concerns the crime and its victims. Later verdict and sentencing proceedings should be identified by their own dates rather than folded into the attack day.

Remembering Responsibly

A respectful account can explain the documented outcome through court records and memorials. It should not reproduce hateful propaganda or provide an attacker-centered visual spectacle.
